He is risen…

Easter is one of my very favorite days of the year.  I love getting dressed up in pretty florals, indulging in lots of candy, the feeling that spring has finally arrived, eating lots of yummy food, spending time with family and friends, and more than anything else, remembering the real reason we celebrate the day and counting the many, many blessings that I have in my life.

So with that, I thought I would share a glimpse of my day, from the cute hi-low skirt I wore to church, to the pretty flowers blossoming all over my yard, capped off by a pretty fantastic evening with friends!

My hubby had to work during the day on Sunday, so I was on my own for photos.  And even though I spent most of  the holiday flying solo before topping things off with a fun evening with friends, it was a beautiful day to sit back, relax, and reflect on how incredibly lucky I am.  Happy Easter and Happy Spring!!

Everything AND the Kitchen Sink

I have always wanted a white kitchen and a farm sink. And when J and I decided to forge ahead and purchase our “fixer-upper”, I had only one stipulation (well that probably isn’t entirely true-pretty sure I had more than one), I was going to have the kitchen I had been dreaming of. I figured if we were going put in all of the hard work and labor, then I wanted to reap the benefits of the end result with a kitchen we could really love and enjoy. And fortunately for me, my hubby was on board. Thus began the work of not only gutting the existing kitchen (which was literally full of exploded paint balls, crusted, moldy spaghetti sauce, and chewing gum-everywhere), but picking all of the perfect pieces to build my new kitchen. And to tell you the truth, I’m not quite sure which part of the equation was harder work!!!

Once the kitchen was finished, we went about year without backsplash. I actually had one picked out from the beginning, but when I went to order it, the dye lot had been slightly altered, making it all wrong for the space. And so I became a huntress of tile. I looked high and low and in every store I could think of and finally, I happened to pop into a Home Depot (not our usual Home Depot) with my hubby and there it was, hanging in the special order section. It must have been meant to be. So after waiting patiently for our order to arrive (which was nothing compared to waiting for over a year to find the perfect backsplash), J and a friend installed the tiles, and I finally have my gorgeous, perfect, totally finished kitchen.

Before…This picture actually makes it look decent-which it wasn’t.

20120405-184618.jpg

Getting my sledge hammer on to remove that AWFUL tile floor, only to discover four more layers of flooring that needed to be removed, and then, instead of the hardwoods we had hoped for, rotted-out subflooring from a previous flood.  Yikes!!

New subfloors, patched walls, and no more hideous light fixtures (thank goodness!!!!!)

20120405-184727.jpg

Cabinets and appliances going in-that was an exciting day.  Although we did live without counter tops and running water for about two weeks (that was a real adventure!)

20120405-185252.jpg

The almost finished product, and the way our kitchen looked for the last year (please excuse our messy counter tops).  It was beautiful and just fine the way it was, but with no backsplash I always felt something was missing…

20120405-185356.jpg

20120405-185452.jpg

And FINALLY-the tile going in, and looking fancy!!!

20120405-185513.jpg

And…the finished product!!  It looks even better in person!!!

20120405-185553.jpg

20120405-185618.jpg

So there you have it. Pretty sure I’m quite in love with it, and pretty sure all of the blood, sweat, and tears that went into this kitchen make me love it that much more. Looking forward to sharing many more before and after stories and photos from our remodel, including the rest of our kitchen, complete with a gorgeous handmade bar crafted by my talented father-in-law! Stay tuned…

Besties

Last weekend, 3 of my best girlfriends from childhood came to visit me in the SLC.  And oh, I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I was counting down to their visit-I was like a little kid waiting for Christmas.  And I have to say, our weekend definitely did not disappoint.  We laughed, and giggled, and shopped, and ate lots of sushi, and shopped and laughed some more, and giggled, and shared stories over cocktails, and even had a pretty rad late night dance party (I can’t remember the last time I stayed up until 3am or did high leg kicks in the street!!!).  So all in all, it was a pretty fabulous weekend and reminded me why we have all been such close friends for so many years-because we all have amazing fashion sense.  Duh!! 😉

Shopping at City Creek Center.  And yes, we all bought matching sunglasses at Cotton On

My outfit:  Striped Tank: H&M(still in stores!)/Black Jacket: Bar III c/o Macy’s/Necklace: H&M(sold out)/Watch: Michael Kors c/o Nordstrom Rack/Sunglasses: Cotton On

Getting ready to head out for a night of sushi and F.U.N.

My outfit:  Blazer: H&M (sold out)/Bird Blouse: H&M (in stores!)/Belt: American Eagle (old)/Jeans: Gap Jeggings (still available in select stores)/Pink Shoes (see last pic): Jessica Simpson c/o Macy’s/Necklace:  Tiffany

Amazing lantern decor at Takashi, my favorite sushi place in the SLC.  **Fun Fact:  These lanterns inspired the lantern canopy I had over the dance floor at my wedding!!!**

Yup, we brought our matching sunglasses out with us and wore them pretty much all night long-because we’re awesome like that. 🙂

And what night would be complete without a super cute pair of shoes?  Certainly not ours!!

So ladies, thank you SO MUCH for making the trip to come and see me.  I love you each dearly and will cherish the memories from last weekend for many, many years to come.  But I guess I am left with one question, when and where are we going to do it again?????

I Have Nothing to Wear…

Even though I have a closet full of clothes I adore, I constantly find myself standing dumbfounded in my closet looking at the clothes hanging all around me and thinking this one particular, very loud thought-I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR.  And if I’m being totally honest, I should probably tell you that this is such a common occurence, it has almost become a part of my morning routine.  And while in theory it might sound crazy, I know I am not the only one out there that suffers from this problem.  In fact, it just so happens to be a widely regarded fact that we wear 30% of our clothes 70% of the time.  And a lof ot you are probably thinking, what???  How can this be?  But when I really stop and think about all of those early mornings when I’m at my least creative, and standing frustrated in my closet, I always tend to gravitate towards what I know already works, which most likely isn’t something that I’ve picked up recently.  So in all reality, it actually does make pretty decent sense.

And that, my friends,  is why I am so grateful for Pinterest and all of the incredible fashion bloggers out there.  All of their beautiful images and terrific outfit ideas are really helping me to step my style up a notch and look at my closet with a new-found creativity.  I am starting to wear more of what I own (although, as I am sure you notice in my posts, I am still a creature of habit), and am really working on pushing myself out of my comfort zone.  In fact, I looked to one of my favorite fashionistas, J, over at J’s Everyday Fashion to garner inspiration for this outfit bright and early on Monday morning when I couldn’t come up with anything on my own…

 Sunglasses:  Steve Madden (last summer)

Sweater:  H&M (sold out in stores)

Cobalt Pants:  American Eagle $49.99

Leopard Shoes:  Aldo (sold out in stores and online)

Watch:  Michael Kors c/o Nordstrom Rack

Bracelets:  H&M (recent)

Pink Handbag:  Rebecca Minkoff c/o Nordstrom Rack

So thank you to all of you visionaries out there, espeically you:  J, Kendi, Emily, Brooklyn Blonde, Kitties+Couture, The Day Book BlogPinterest, and many, many others, for your continued inspiration and amazing outfit ideas.  Even though I work in fashion, and am constatnly bombarded by trends and terrific images, I hold all of you in incredibly high regard and am grateful for all of the great ideas you have given me and look forward to more to come!!

Hamilton

I travel a lot for work and am constantly tailoring what I take with me so that I can be comfortable and practical. And since my office is mobile, I am always juggling some sort of purse and my laptop bag (so far I am holding firm on my refusal to get a roller). So after some research and several failed attempts at creating the just the right combo, I think I have finally found my perfect travel handbag. Drum roll please….. the Michael Kors Hamilton bag. Not only is it incredibly chic, but it’s the perfect size for traveling and the first bag in my collection that is a light tan (which is not only season-less, but also the perfect neutral).

Bag:  Michael Kors Hamilton Macy’s $398 (I picked mine up at TJMaxx for about half the price)

Jacket:  H&M (sold out)

Mint Tunic: H&M (old)

Leggings:  American Apparel

Necklaces:  Tiffany and my personal charm collection

iPhone Case:  Kate Spade c/o Nordstrom

Andif you couldn’t tell by the last photo of me standing in a hotel room, I had the chance to test out my newest accessory last week and brought it along with me to Macy’s market in Seattle.  The verdict?  I absolutely loved it. Definitely worth the investment-plus it definitely doesn’t hurt that it is one of the hottest bags right now.  🙂

Blossom (and The Hunger Games)

Has anyone else out there seen the new Old Navy commercial complete with Blossom AND Joey???? I saw it the other day and not only did I love the throwback to one of my favorite classic TV shows, but I was totally inspired by the vibrant colors, floral prints, and all things spring showcased in the ad. So much in fact, that I decided to throw together this bright and cheery outfit to go to church, run errands, and catch a showing of the Hunger Games with some of my favorite gals on Sunday…

Cardigan:  H&M (recent)

Striped Tank:  H&M (last summer)

Floral Scarf: Francesca’s $18 (recent)

Purple Jeans: Else by Joe’s Jeans exclusively for Macy’s  $68.00 (post to come!!!)

Boots:  Aldo Farmar (sold out)

Watch:  Michael Kors c/o Macy’s

Bracelets:  Tiffany

To be honest, I was totally on the fence about these purple jeans at first, but now that I have worn them, I am really loving them!  In fact, yesterday when I was out and about, I literally had several people stop me to ask where I’d found them.  And not only are they cute, but they are way comfy too.  They were the perfect choice to wear to a movie, and didn’t bag out in the bootie after sitting for a couple of hours.  And speaking of the movie, The Hunger Games was FANTASTIC!!! I adored the books, and never like screen adaptations as well as their novel counterparts, but I just loved this movie.  The casting was spot on and much of it (of course there were a few exceptions) was just as I had imagined.  If you haven’t read the books or seen the movie, I highly recommend both.  Oh, and Team Peeta all the way!!!

Keepin’ It Casual

As a district planner for Macy’s, I am always busy juggling many different hats and recently the addition of opening a new store in the City Creek Center in downtown Salt Lake City, UT has been added to my plate. It is the only retail development in the United States opening this year, so it is a pretty darn big deal. And while the hours have been long, and stocking shelves, chasing orders, and planning plans have all been exhausting, I know the results will be well worth it in the end.

But perhaps more challenging than the grueling schedule, has been the difficulty in figuring out what to wear for this type of work. Normally we are in an office setting, but for this phase of our job, as we set the store, we have to be casual, comfortable, and open to getting dirty. And let me tell you, for me this is much more difficult than you might think. Not only do I work in fashion, but I LOVE fashion so have a hard time dressing dowdy for any occasion. And having to be at work an extra hour early, I am certainly not at my most creative when it comes time to getting dressed in the morning. So a challenge it has been. BUT I did manage to pull together a few looks, and even felt this one might just be blog worthy.

Polka Dot Top:  H&M (recent)

Jeans:  Seven for All Mankind (old)

Boots:  Aldo Farmar (sold out)

Ring:  Italian Flea Market

Nail Polish: Hunger Games for China Glaze District 12 with OPI gold crackle

And yes, even though I have been doing a lot of manual labor, I still made sure to paint my nails.  I can’t decide if it is an addiction or obsession (or both) but not matter the situation, you won’t often catch me with bare nails.  It kind of feels like being naked!!

Stay tuned for more updates on the new store to come.  Our grand opening was actually today!!!  It was amazing, but exhausting, so I am off to bed to get some  much needed rest.  Sweet dreams(of new shoes, of course).

Party in the Front, Business in the Back

I have been on the fence about the big hi-low trend this season. Not because I don’t like the look, but I think it is a trend better suited for tall people, and I am by no means tall. But the fashionista in me has definitely had me curious and I have been keeping my eyes open (but not exactly looking) for a piece that might work for someone shorter like me. Let’s just say that it has been on my “want” list, but definitely towards the bottom.

And then one day, when I was working in the new Macy’s store that we are opening (THIS WEEK!!!!), I overheard two sales associates talking about “mullet” skirts. It took me a minute to realize what a mullet skirt was and then of course I realized they were talking about hi-low skirts. And in that moment, I knew I had to have one. I mean, really? A skirt named after the raddest hair style known to man kind? Who wouldn’t want one???

Skirt:  Material Girl (select Macy’s stores)

Belt: American Eagle

Leggings: American Apparel

Watch:  Michael Kors c/o Nordstrom Rack

Black Wedges: Urban Outfitters (sold out)

So not only have I found my perfect mullet skirt, but my version is a super fun and flattering silky fabric with a unique striped pattern that I am just in love with. Plus, with all of the colors, it makes for an easy piece to wear a lot of different ways.  But this is how I styled it for a date night with my hubby to celebrate his 30th birthday over the weekend. I also gave him the night off and took my own photos so he could put his feet up and relax!  Happy, happy birthday to my love!!!

’80’s Child

Not only was I born in the ’80’s (I won’t tell you what year), but as an adult, I still consider myself a child of the ’80’s (probably where my love for color stems from). And thus, it is safe to assume that this must be the reason why I am still (and always have been) fond of all things neon. And when I attended our Vendor Summit in SF last fall to catch a sneak preview of all of the spring fashions to come (which of course are upon us now), I couldn’t help but find myself totally infatuated by the theme of neon accents we were inundated with from just about every vendor who presented (there was also an overwhelming presentation of pajama jeans-not kidding). And so, ever since that sunny day in the beautiful city by the bay, I have been day dreaming of the perfect pair of neon pumps (but not of pajama jeans).

And so, as luck would have it, before I even began my quest for the perfect neon pumps, I had my radio tuned to Wake Up with Taylor on Sirius Cosmo Radio to keep me entertained on my commute to work, and miss Taylor (who I ADORE) was going absolutely crazy for a pair of neon pumps she purchased from Aldo that everyone was mistaking for Manolo Blahniks. Ding! Ding! Ding! JACKPOT!!!! Pretty sure I made a trip to Aldo on my way home that night. 🙂 However, Aldo didn’t have the pumps I was looking for in my size, which led me to discover that Nordstrom is now carrying a line exclusively made for them by Aldo. And guess what they happened to have??? A pair of incredible neon yellow pumps in my size-which also happened to be the absolute last pair they had in stock. So apparently not only was it meant to be, but I am not the only one around here totally enamored with the thought of day-glow tootsies.

And let me tell you, these shoes are so bright, I think they might actually glow in the dark, and I couldn’t be happier with them! A little pop of happiness for my feet!!

Color Blocking

I love color blocking-so retro and mod-not to mention just plain fun. I mean seriously, pairing multiple big blocks of colors together at the same time? Genius!!!  In fact, I love this trend so much, I wanted to devote an entire post to it!

But before I do, I do have a little confession to make.  It’s funny the things you learn about yourself when blogging, and I have clearly learned (in more ways than one) that I am a creature of habit.  In fact, when I decided to write about color blocking, I immediately gravitated towards red and…wait for it…pink (surprise, surprise).  But it also occurred to me that the last two posts I have shared have pretty much been about the color pink.  Fortunately, for the sake of this post, I remembered the below gorgeous royal blue and teal silk blouse hanging in my closet that I picked up when I was in Seattle a few weeks ago-a perfect example of color blocking. Thus, I made the decision not to continue to bore you with my love for pink (you’re welcome), and change things up a bit by letting shades of blue take center stage (although my yellow suede pumps do make another appearance).  Baby steps…

Long Necklace:  Personal Collection of Charms

Crystal Necklace:  Sundance Catalog (sold out)

Besides the color blocking element, I also love how versatile this outfit is.  I could wear it to work, for a date with the hubs, or even for a night out on the town with the girls (would check my blazer at the door).   And since I have to dress up for work, like many of you do, I am sure, the ease of day to night can sometimes be the most important element before heading out the door when we get dressed in the morning.  If only all outfits were this simple!!
