Recently I went through a phase where I couldn’t stop wearing neutrals. Yet suddenly, I can’t seem to get enough of bright colors. But I definitely can’t blame it on the spring-like weather, because it’s dumping snow here in Utah again this week!!!!! Yesterday I talked a little bit about the importance of having balance between classic and fashion pieces in your wardrobe. But another important closet category that I didn’t mention, is staple pieces. If you have been following this blog for any amount of time, then you know staples are something I talk about a fair amount, i.e. denim jackets, surplus vests, nude pumps, black handbags, dark wash skinny jeans, etc. And so today, I wanted to highlight one of my personal favorite closet staples, and that is a casual long-sleeved black dress.

If you didn’t add anything in the shade of mint to your Spring/Summer wardrobe last year, then it should be at the top of your list this season. I have a slight obsession with cognac boots-or more specifically these cognac boots. I wear them more than any other piece of footwear that I own and I am feeling pretty bummed that they are all but about worn out. And because I knew this would most likely be their last season, I have been on the hunt for a replacement pair all fall. And surprisingly I have had absolutely zero luck. Maybe I’ve set my standards too high, but how hard could it possibly be to find a pair in the right shade of cognac with a low heel (wedge or stacked), wide enough to fit my calves, that go with everything, and are neither too dressy, nor too casual? Apparently it’s nearly impossible. Looks like a trip to the cobbler is in my very near future-I need all the help I can get prolonging the life of these babies…

Contrary to what you might think, I don’t get really dressed up very often. Obviously I love to write posts and share all of my fun outfit ideas with you guys, but truth be told, if you were to bump into me out running errands around the SLC, chances are you would find me wearing something similar to the below. In the summertime, my general uniform is a great pair of cutoffs (I’m especially partial to white) back to a tee, or a great button down (for a slightly more put together look). So when Justin and I had a mini-golf date with our littles followed by a trip to the new City Creek Center and beers on the patio at the Beer Hive, I knew for once exactly what I was going to wear (without really even putting any thought into it). And sometimes, simple as they are, those are often times my favorite outfits.

I am so in love withy the color of this JCrew shirt-and the fabric and gingham are a perfect summer combo. In fact I’m not at all surprised that this is actually called “The Perfect Shirt”. So if you are looking for a great fitting, lightweight summer button down, I would highly recommend this one.
