FPF: Cognac Boots

Happy Friday, everyone!  I don’t know about all of you, but I am so excited that the weekend is finally HERE!  Pretty sure Friday is my favorite day of the week-and with good reason, I suppose.  Kind of makes me want to dance a little jig.  🙂

So in honor of favorite product Friday, I wanted to take a minute and address my love for cognac boots.  *Sigh* And now that boot season is upon us (and I’m used to wearing socks with something besides tennis shoes again), I can’t stop wearing mine.  It hasn’t been that cold in the SLC, but that hasn’t stopped me yet.  And despite a collection of beautiful boots in my wardrobe, I always seem to gravitate towards my cognac boots, no matter the outfit.  They are a great neutral, a little more exciting than just plain black or brown, and go with just about anything.

similar, similar, similar

My poor Farmar boots are starting to get a little worn, which is a good thing because I can wear them for bumming around town and to cross races without having to think twice, but that also means I need to find a replacement for them.  Fortunately, a couple of weeks back I found an amazing deal on a gorgeous pair of Vince Camuto boots and snatched them right up.  And while the color is slightly different from my tried and true Farmar boots, I have a feeling they will be my staple boot for the season.  Stay tuned for a glimpse of them in an upcoming post!

Happy, happy weekend everyone!

Drop It Like It’s Hot

Drop. Waist. Dresses. I am absolutely LOVING this look. It is so fresh and such a welcome update to all of the trends we have been seeing as of late. They are fun, flirty, and a fall must-have if you love to wear dresses (like I do). And given my penchant for mixing sassy and sweet, I knew the combo of leather and chiffon made this dress a must have for my fall wardrobe…

The only challenge with drop waist dresses this time of year is finding something to wear over them. I tried several blazers and different jackets with this dress, but none looked like quite right. So I ended up settling on wearing it with a plain long-sleeved black tee underneath, in true jumper fashion. But I am looking forward to playing around with it and coming up with more ways to style this piece. Perhaps a starched white blouse underneath will be my next concoction. Hope you all had a wonderful weekend.

My very cute, and very funny little dog, Charlie, kept photo-bombing my blog photos this weekend.  What can I say?  She loves shoes.  In fact, when she was a puppy my favorite heels somehow always became her favorite chew toys (NOT good).  But since we share a love for fashion, I figured I’d let her make her first cameo in today’s post!  😉

Seeing Spots

Two black and white outfit posts in a row-now that’s saying something for a girl who loves color like I do. And contrary to how I thought I might feel, I have found the black and white trend to be quite refreshing this season. So considering this and my penchant for snow leopard prints (which you can read about it here) it’s no surprise that this dress caught my eye on a recent H&M trip. A hybrid of leopard and polka dots all wrapped up in black in white? How could I resist.

As I noted in yesterday’s post, J and I headed on a road trip to Montana this past weekend so J could ride in the annual Rolling Thunder cross race in Missoula.  It is a weekend we look forward to every year, not only because of the terrific event, but because we get to see family and friends while we are there.  And this year, of course, did not disappoint.  J had a podium finish in one of his two races, I snuck in some time with girlfriends (including meeting one’s little boy for the first time!), and most importantly, we were blessed to spend the weekend with J’s dad, and his brother and his wife (who just moved to the neighborhood where these photos were taken!!).  It was a long drive home on Sunday, but the weekend was well worth the trip.

The Motor City

I was born and raised in Montana, but both of my parents are from the Motor City which is where the majority of our family still resides. And last weekend, I was blessed to have the opportunity to head back to Detroit to spend a few days with extended family and celebrate my beloved grandmother’s 90th birthday. I don’t get to Michigan nearly as much as I would like, so every moment I was there was a moment cherished.

My grandma is quite a special lady and we had a beautiful celebration of her wonderful life and the lady that she is. The doorbell rang non-stop while I was there with packages and beautiful flower deliveries, the phone rang off the hook, and the outpouring of love was palpable. It was a really special thing to be a part of and the opportunity of time spent with not only my grandma, but my aunties, uncle, cousins, and parents was priceless. Here are a few pictures from her birthday party. Can you guess which one is my mom? 😉

One of my favorite parts of the weekend was spending a couple of hours going through old photos with my Grandma Thelm.  It was a beautiful walk down memory lane and I loved seeing how beautifully women used to dress (the tailoring was immaculate!), images of my grandma as a gorgeous, young professional working in downtown Detroit, the tale of a love lost in war, stories of my grandpa and his fascinating family, photos of my mom and her siblings as kiddos, and perhaps my favorite was the realization that my crooked dimples are exactly the same as my grandma’s-which makes me now love them that much more.  All in all, it was a weekend full of memories that will be cherished for a long, long time to come.

Vacation

I haven’t taken a vacation since I started my new job with Macy’s last September. Between living in San Francisco for 4 months and getting into the swing of things with my new position when I got back to the SLC, time has been flying. So I have to say that I have been looking forward to our annual week in Montana even more than usual this summer. And so far the trip has been amazing-perfect weather, a podium finish in a challenging bike race (for Justin), time on the road bike (for me), and LOTS of laughs with family. And since I haven’t worn much besides my spandex and a bathing suit since we left the SLC last Friday, I don’t have any outfit posts as of yet, so thought instead I would share with you some of the highlights of our trip so far.

Gorgeous morning for Justin’s big race, the Butte 50

20120731-102513.jpg

I snuck in some miles on my road bike while J raced-Highway 2 from Butte to White Hall is GORGEOUS!

20120731-102533.jpg

It was a successful day!  Despite a major mechanical (broken derailer), J still managed to finish, and in 3rd place.  Pretty darn awesome.

So proud of J!

Another perfect day.

Hopefully I will be back with more outfit posts tomorrow. But for now, I am enjoying a coffee on my parent’s big front porch, taking in the pretty views, and gearing up to hit the lake (again!)!!

Hope you are all having a wonderful week.

All Dolled Up

I remember getting engaged like it was yesterday. Justin whisked me up to Park City on a surprise weekend getaway and got down on one knee in a hot air balloon high above the Wasatch Front. It was exciting and romantic and truly one of the best moments that I’ve had in my life. I also remember our wedding day (the day I officially became all “Dolled” up-yes, my married name is Doll) like it just happened last summer. It was such a perfect day filled with family and friends and overflowing with love and the promise of forever (not to mention that we were married at the most gorgeous venue we could ever have dreamed of). So it seems absolutely crazy to me that tomorrow is our 5th wedding anniversary. I guess what they say really is true, time flies when you’re having fun.

For those of you who know me well, it will come as no surprise that I always get a little sentimental around this time every year and spend a lot of time reflecting on our lives and our journey thus far. And I have to say that this year as I think about all we have been through (an extended backpacking trip to Thailand, a gang shooting, multiple moves, the loss of our beloved dog, job promotions and changes, countless adventures, and a HUGE home renovation project-to name a few of the highlights), I think the word that best sums up the last 5 years for me is grateful. I have been so blessed by Justin and feel so fortunate that I get to spend my life with a man who is kind, funny, loves to smile, loves his family, loves me, an incredible athlete (who pushes himself to new limits all the time), my biggest supporter, my best friend, my love, and a man who gives his all in everything does and constantly pushes me to be a better and stronger person both mentally and physically. He’s also pretty easy on the eyes. 🙂

So in honor of this milestone in our lives, I wanted to take a little stroll down memory lane and share some of my favorite wedding photos with all of you-through the lens of Instagram, of course!

In honor of our 5 official years together, we are heading up to Park City for the weekend to do a little relaxing and of course a lot of celebrating.  I am so looking forward to reflecting on all of the memories we have made thus far, and of course making some more.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

P.S.  I can’t wait to do an outfit post about the dress I got to wear to our anniversary dinner!  Not only is it beautiful, but I also got an amazing deal on it-like really amazing.  Stay tuned!!!!  🙂

To Market, To Market

On of my very favorite things about summer is hitting the farmer’s market. And here in the SLC, we are fortunate to have several different beautiful markets to choose from during the warm summer months. And while I am fond of many, the Downtown SLC Farmer’s Market is by far my favorite.  J and I love to spend our Saturday mornings wandering the booths with our dogs, sipping coffee, sampling fresh produce, cheeses, and breads, and admiring all of the pretty baubles in the jewelry booths (well, I like that last part, anyway). 🙂

But with so many markets to attend, that leaves the question, what is appropriate to wear to a farmer’s market? In summer’s past, I have often gravitated towards sundresses or maxis (both of which are still great options), but this summer, I am loving throwing on a brightly colored pair of shorts, a fun print or neon tank (especially a tribal print!), my favorite gold flats, and my tried and true fedora-complete with a messy side bun. It is a hip and easy ensemble that not only helps me stay cool on a hot summer morning, but also lets me feel like the market loving fashionista that I am!

I have posted quite a few times about my adoration for my Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC, and with continued use, I seem to be falling more and more in love with it. Not only does the fun neon pink color make it ideal for a night on the town, but the cross body styling makes it fitting for an afternoon of running errands. And so of course, it is now my perfect bag Farmer’s Market bag as it allows me to have both hands free to juggle a leash, my morning coffee, and lots of local yummy goodness!

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend. Happy Monday, dolls!

Favorite Product Friday: Chanel Lip Gloss

Coco Chanel.  The name alone is enough to give me goosebumps-not only is she my fashion icon, but Coco Chanel was a strong and independent woman who was not afraid to speak the truth and say what she believed, which is perhaps why her empire remains at the forefront of our fashion and beauty world today.

One of my all time favorite quotes from Coco (and I have A LOT) is her insistence that:

“A girl should be two things:  classy and fabulous.”

For whatever reason, this particular quote has always struck a chord with me-probably because almost above all else (kindness always reigns supreme), I want to be classy and fabulous!   And recently, I have found a little trick to help me feel extra fabulous every day.  In fact, I don’t want to leave home without it!!

So…here is the scoop!!  I was in NYC for work recently and while I was perusing the beauty department at the Macy’s at Herald Square (which, BTW is the biggest department store in the WORLD!!), I stopped to try to get someone’s attention at the Bobbi Brown counter to perhaps buy a new lip gloss or some eyeshadow.  But the two gals working the counter were embroiled in a very dramatic conversation and ignored me just long enough that I decided to move on.  And thank goodness I did, because when I turned around, the pretty blonde at the Chanel counter flagged me down and asked if she could try a new gloss on me.  I was hesitant, but have a friend who raves about Chanel gloss, so I obliged.  And in that moment, I discovered my new secret weapon to feeling fabulous-Chanel Levres Scintillantes Glossimer in Sweet Beige.

Hands down, this is the BEST gloss I have ever used.  It has just enough sparkle and shine, the color is subtle but pretty, it isn’t sticky AT ALL, the application is amazingly smooth, and it lasts an absurdly long time (for a gloss).  Plus, I would be lying if I said I didn’t get a little thrill each time I pull this glossy fabulous-ness out of my bag and see those two little intertwined C’s on the top-a little piece of my fashion icon with me every day.  🙂

Colors from left to right:  Petite Peche #148, Sunset Gold #64, Sweet Beige #297

Fabulous, practical, and pretty.  Don’t you think???? And I know I specifically referenced that it was Sweet Beige that was making me feel fabulous every day (and it is!!!), but since there are three glosses pictured, I have an obvious confession.  I have been so enamored with this product that I already bought it in two other colors!!! Thank goodness for my employee discount (but shhhh, don’t tell my hubby-lipgloss is one thing, among many, that he just doesn’t understand).

Wishing you a classy and fabulous weekend!!!!

God Bless the USA

I heart the 4th of July. It is such a great celebration of our country and everything summer. And of course a great excuse to get together with family and friends to BBQ and watch fireworks. This year, we decided to host a little 4th of July BBQ at the Doll house because we have a great view of the entire SLC and all of the firework shows in town (well, that and the fact that I LOVE to entertain). 🙂 So a few of our closest friends, along with Justin’s parents (who are in town visiting), joined us for a celebration filled with tons of yummy food, lots of laughter and a firework show that did not disappoint (thanks crazy neighbors!). It was such a fun night-so a big thanks to everyone who came and shared in the festivities with us!

Not only do I love celebrating the 4th with family and friends, but it is also a day where I try and find a few moments to take stock and remember just how blessed I am to live in this great country.  I am so grateful for our freedom and all of the unique blessing that we have because we live in America, and espeically for all of those who have dedicated and lost their lives to give us that freedom and those that continue to protect it. God bless the USA.

Happy Independence Day Weekend, everyone!

LPD

One of the cardinal rules of fashion is the importance of owning at least one LBD (little black dress). It is the perfect answer for date night, or when you are in a pinch and need something nice to wear last-minute, and a great blank canvas that you can constantly reinvent with different shoes and accessories. Plus, black is super slimming and looks fabulous on everyone. And while the LBD will always be important, this season it seems the trend is all about the LWD (little white dress). Now don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan of the LWD, but it obviously doesn’t quite cast the same universal appeal as the LBD. So if you aren’t ready to jump on the LWD band wagon, perhaps you should consider adding an LPD (little print dress) to your wardrobe instead.

Now when I say LPD, I am not talking about a cotton, ditsy print dress that you would wear to the farmers market or to lunch with your girlfriends. I am talking about a print dress that you would wear to a wedding, on a date nite, or even for a girl’s night out on the town. Something similar in silhouette to your LBD, but with a fun print instead! I picked up the below BCBGeneration dress with some money that I received for my birthday, and I have to say that for the summertime, I think it is definitely rivaling both my LBD and my LWD as my current go-to choice for a night out.

It was such a gorgeous weekend here in the SLC (minus the the smoke from the fires) so J and I took full advantage enjoying dinner on the patio at one of our favorite restaurants, The Copper Onion, followed by a long walk around our downtown, where we discovered beautifully painted pianos every few blocks.  Apparently they are part of the Play Me, I’m Yours street piano tour which began in 2008.  There are over 600 pianos in cities across the globe and they are open to anyone in the public to play.  So, needless to say, I sat down and played a couple of numbers entertaining people passing by.  It was the perfect end to a perfect balmy summer night (which had already given us the excuse to get all dolled up and hit the town in the first place!).  Boy do I heart summer.

Happy Monday!
