Dressy

I have made a pledge this year to wear more dresses. I’m not quite sure why, but I naturally tend to gravitate towards jeans, heels, and cute tops. But it gets so hot in the SLC during the summer months, that dresses are really a must. PLUS they are so cute and comfy and fun and I am really loving all of the vibrant prints and colors that I am seeing available in stores this season. Case and point? The dress in today’s post. Not only does the tribal print of this dress lend itself well back to denim, but because it showcases so many different colors, it will be an easy piece to style multiple ways this summer. And in my book, versatile pieces like this are the key to expanding your wardrobe without spending a lot of money!

It’s one of the cooler places I’ve been in the SLC. In fact, it’s actually where we shot these photos. And not only is their coffee and ambiance amazing, but they have an entire menu dedicated solely to different kinds of toast. Brilliant!

Nickel Creek

If you know me personally, then you know I LOVE music. And if you don’t, well now you know. I also have a pretty broad taste in music, thanks to my dad’s influence growing up and studying and pursuing music in college. And while my love for music is broad, there are a handful of bands/musicians that are especially near and dear to my heart. And one of those such bands is Nickel Creek. I have been a huge fan of theirs since the late ’90’s when I first fell in love with country and bluegrass. And when they broke up in 2007 before I had a chance to see them live, I was pretty devastated. So when they announced they were getting back together this year and starting to tour in May-I knew I absolutely had to see them. And as luck would have it, the 3rd stop on their Dotted Line tour just happened to be in Salt Lake City. So J and I scored amazing 3rd row tickets and have been counting down the days to the show. And I have got to tell you, the musical talent that this band possesses is truly mind-blowing. It was an absolutely incredible show and I can’t stop smiling today thinking of the magic we saw last night up on that stage. So if you love bluegrass or appreciate musical talent, then check and see if Nickel Creek is coming to your town. And if they are, GO SEE THEM! I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Now on to today’s outfit, which is actually what I wore to the show last night. Casual, but cool with a fun pop of color. When I go to a concert or show I always like to wear a cute tank/cami with a jacket so that I can take the jacket off if I get warm, or leave it on if the venue is cool. In my book, it’s always good to be prepared for either possibility. I am also a high heel kind of girl, but always make sure to wear my comfy heels so that my feet can be sure to last through a night of dancing…

Derby Style

Even though I was born and raised out west, I did live in the south for a few years when I pursued a country music career and attended college at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. And let me just say, my years in the Music City were some of the best of my life. There is just something about the South that is so near and dear to me. What can I say? I’m a country girl at heart. And because I especially love all of the incredible traditions that come from the South, J and I decided to throw a Derby party this year. I have always wanted to host one, but haven’t had the chance since I moved to Utah. But this year, it was the perfect excuse to get extra dressed up, enjoy the gorgeous weather, drink cocktails in the afternoon, and celebrate my birthday (a few days early) with all of our favorite people! It was a great time had by all, and served as the perfect reminder to wear big, floppy hats more often!

Do you guys remember L’eggs when they were sold in the iconic egg packaging? I know I sure do. And because I always thought of them as an ’80’s staple, I was surprised (and excited!) when they contacted me and asked me to be a part of their 40th birthday celebration and re-launch of their limited edition egg packaging. Now to be totally honest, I have always been on the fence when it comes to pantyhose and tights, and always have been. But with the popularity of tights and pantyhose over the last year, I figured why not give them a try. And I have to say-I am SO happy that I did. In today’s post, I am wearing the sun-tan shade which gave my winter white legs just the right hint of color and smoothed out all of the unevenness caused by those long winter months of nothing but pants. In fact, when we shot these photos, my hubby didn’t even realize that I was wearing pantyhose. BUT he did tell me that my legs looked great! Whistle Blower

Even though my husband always tells me that I look like a referee every time I wear anything black and white striped, I refuse to be deterred. And when I spotted this skirt at Forever21, I knew it was right up my alley (hello, stripes!). Maxi skirts are really the perfect transitional piece of the moment that you can wear now, and later. And I am always a fan of adding pieces to your wardrobe that can serve a variety of purposes. An added bonus?? While I am not tall by any means (5’4″ if I’m stretching on my tiptoes), the long flowing vertical stripes of this skirt give off the illusion that I am actually taller than I am. Hallelujah!

There was a period in time that I wore this denim vest so much that I had to make a conscious effort not to wear it so often. And I did such a good job of avoiding it that it ended up buried in the back of my closet and forgotten about for a period of time.
